Serge Ponomarev - Art for Sale

Serge Ponomarev was a Russian artist born August 20th, 1911 in Minsk (Belarus). Ponomarev produced varied works including paintings, sculptures and medals. Here is our selection of paintings for sale by Serge Ponomarev.

Serge Ponomarev painted landscapes and flowers as well as being a sculptor and medalist. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Vilnius (Lithuania) in 1931. After a move to Paris, Ponomarev studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts under Louis-Henri Bouchard in 1932 and participated in the salons of the Independents. He returned to Vilnius briefy to fulfil some commissions before settling in Paris until 1944. Ponomarev exhibited for the first time in 1941 and well in to later life, having solo Paris exhibitions in 1957, 1964, 1966 and 1978. He also exhibited at the Salon and at the Tuileries regularly and formed part of a number of group exhibitions. Up until the 1950s he produced mainly marble sculptures and after the late 1950s he concentrated mostly on painting.

Ponomarev won awards for sculpure and medal design, and in 1978 received the The Rubens Prize of the City of Siegen, which is awarded every five years to a painter or graphic artist who occupies an outstanding position in European art due to his or her pioneering life's work. He also won a number of medals including Société Académique Arts – Sciences – Lettres , Médaille de Vermeil in 1968, Société Académique Arts – Sciences – Lettres , Médaille d’Or in 1969 and Le Mérite et le Dévouement Français in 1980. Serge Ponomarev died in 1984.

Note: There is some confusion as to Ponaomarev's surname caused by the way he signed his surname with a 'v' that looks like a 'w'. The artist has been erroneously referenced as Serge Ponomarew on many occasions.
