DESCRIPTION: For sale - a rare 1970s abstract oil by the important British St Ives painter Margaret Mellis. From around 1969, Mellis produced works in the form of broken or 'fragmented' oval shapes brush-painted with areas of flat colour. This example is made up of areas of yellow, blue and pink. At this time Mellis would often overlay colours in order to build up colour depth and texture and this is the case with the yellow pigment, which overlays a green base layer of colour. The artist explores this technique in the documentary 'Margaret Mellis: A Life in Colour'. The work is unframed.
