Although Durenne didn't start painting until his mid 30s, he did attend the Académie Julian art school in Paris from 1887-1888 where he met Bonnard and Vuillard, and then the Colarossi courses in the following years where he met Albert André and Louis Valtat.

In 1894 Durenne exhibited with the Symbolists at the Galerie Le Barc de Boutteville and at the Eighth Impressionist Exhibition in Paris. He had works exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1903-1913, the Salon Terres Latines in 1964 and the Tavet museum in 1977, as well as solo events in 1978 and 1983 at the city museum in Brest and the Pissarro museum respectively.

Parisian art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel was interested in the works of Durenne and catalogued and photographed his bank of works.
